Applications are invited for a Chair of Software Engineering in the
Computing Department at Lancaster to lead and enhance our world class
activities in this area. Research in the department covers a wide range of
activity related to contemporary computer systems including networked and
distributed systems, mobile and ubiquitous systems and human-centric
computing. Our work in software engineering sits at the heart of this
spectrum of activity addressing tools and techniques for the construction of
such complex systems with emphasis on areas such as requirements
engineering, aspect-oriented software development, system dependability and
component- and service- based software engineering. We also have a proud
tradition of taking a human-centric approach to the subject, e.g. with our
groundbreaking work on the role of ethnography in software engineering. The
successful candidate will have an outstanding international reputation for
research in software engineering, will be able to provide distinct
leadership for our work in this area, will complement and add considerable
value to our existing activities, and will also ideally have strong
industrial links and be able to build large collaborative projects.

The department offers a highly collegiate and stimulating environment with
around 30 faculty, 53 researchers and a team of technical and administrative
support staff (including research support). We also have a very large PhD
programme with over 100 participants, and hold approximately £10m in
research funding from a diverse range of sources including from EPSRC and EU
sponsored research projects and direct from industry. The department is
housed in InfoLab21, a state-of-the-art building dedicated to world class
research and technology transfer in ICT (http://infolab21.lancs.ac.uk/).

Salary will be at an appropriate point on the Professorial salary scale.
Note that, as an added incentive, a permanent lectureship (equivalent to
assistant professorships in the US system) is associated with this position
and the successful candidate will be involved in the recruitment process for
this additional post.

Interviews are scheduled to take place over the 1st and 2nd of March 2007.
Informal enquiries can be made to the Head of Department, Professor Gordon
