Like its predecessors, TOOLS EUROPE 2007 combines an emphasis on quality with a strong practical focus. This is the 45th TOOLS conference. Started in 1989, TOOLS conferences, held in Europe, the USA, Australia, China and Eastern Europe, have played a major role in the development of object technology field; many of the seminal concepts were first presented at TOOLS. After an interruption of four years, the conference is now revived to reflect the maturing of the field and the new challenges ahead. Contributions are solicited on all aspects of object technology and neighbouring fields, in particular model-based development, component-based development, and patterns (design, analysis and other applications); more generally, any contribution addressing topics in advanced software technology fall within the scope of TOOLS. Reflecting the practical emphasis of TOOLS, contributions showcasing applications along with a sound conceptual contribution are particularly welcome. For a non-exclusive list of potential topic areas see the conference Web page. Submission Guidelines All contributions will be subject to a rigorous selection process by the international Program Committee, with a stress on originality, practicality and overall quality. Every paper will be reviewed by at least 4 committee members. The acceptance rate will be published in the conference proceedings; TOOLS is committed to a fair and extensive peer-review process establishing a high standard in the area of modern practices in software engineering. By submitting a paper to TOOLS, authors warrant that the work is original and that the paper or a similar contribution is neither published nor considered for publication elsewhere. Submissions should follow the publication format of the Journal of Object Technology (JOT). Papers should be limited in size to 20 single-spaced pages. Further details are available from the website. Important Dates Deadline for technical papers: February 1, 2007, midnight Zurich time Author notification: April 15, 2007 Camera-ready copy due: May 15, 2007 The proceedings will be published as a special issue of the Journal of Object Technology. Best regards, Alexander Romanovsky Tutorial: Architecting Fault Tolerant Systems Sixth Working IEEE/IFIP Conference on Software Architecture Mumbai, India Call for Participation January 7, 2007, (Half Day - PM) http://www.gv.psu.edu/WICSA2007/tutorials.htm Fault tolerance, being one of the four means for guaranteeing dependability, is intended to ensure the delivery of the correct services in the presence of active faults. It is implemented by error detection and subsequent system recovery. Error detection finds an erroneous system state. Following system recovery transforms the system state that contains one or more errors and (possibly) faults into a state without detected errors and faults (fault handling). Exceptions and exception handling provide a general framework for structuring the fault tolerance activities in a system, by focusing on the concept of exceptional/abnormal behaviour (as opposed to normal behaviour), exception handling enables specifying actions to be undertaken in the presence of abnormal events. While typical solutions focus on fault tolerance (and specifically, exception handling) during the design and implementation phases of the software life-cycle (e.g., Java and Windows NT exception handling), more recently the need for explicit exception handling solutions during the entire life cycle has been advocated by some researchers. Several solutions have been proposed for fault tolerance via exception handling at the software architecture and component levels. This tutorial describes how the two concepts of fault tolerance and software architectures have been integrated so far. It is structured in two parts (Overview on Fault Tolerance and Exception Handling, and Integrating Fault Tolerance into Software Architecture) and is based on a survey study on architecting fault tolerant systems where more than fifteen approaches have been analyzed and classified. The tutorial concludes identifying those issues that remain still open and require deeper investigation. Lecturers: H. Muccini, P. Model-driven architectures (MDA) and model-driven software development (MDSD) focuses on the idea of constructing software systems not by programming in a specific programming language but by designing models that are translated into executable software systems by generators. These characteristics enable designers to deliver product releases within much shorter periods of time compared to the traditional methods. In theory, this process makes it unnecessary to care for an executable system?s quality, as it is "optimized" by the generators. However, proponents of MDA must provide convincing answers to questions such as "What is the quality of the models and software produced?". The designed models are also a work product that requires a minimal set of quality aspects (e.g., the maintainability of models over a longer life-time). Quality assurance techniques such as testing, inspections, software analysis, or software measurement are well researched for programming languages, but their application in the domain of software models and model-driven software development is still in an embryonic phase. The goals of quality assurance for model-driven software development are diverse and include the improvement of quality aspects such as maintainability, reusability, security, or performance. Quality assurance for model-driven software development will play an important role for the future wide-spread usage of model-driven architectures in general, as well as in specific application domains. Book Objectives & Mission This book aims at publishing original academic work and experience reports from industry related to quality assurance for model-driven software development (QAMDSD). The book?s mission is to give a clear description of the fundamentals in QAMDSD theory, to fill the gap in the literature, and to provide concrete results from software development organizations. Successful quality assurance for model-driven software development can help participants in the software development process avoid risks and project failures that are frequently encountered in traditional and agile software projects. The whole development process must be analyzed, measured, and validated from the quality point of view. The area is wide and entails many facets that the book must clarify, including: ? Differences and similarities between the traditional and model-driven quality aspects, ? Identification of quality aspects in model-driven development, ? Model-driven design and development of high-quality software, ? Evaluation of quality in model-driven development, ? Reports on the state-of-the-art regarding quality in model-driven development, ? Investigation on how processes affect the quality in model-driven development. Please send to interested colleagues and students) Call for Papers ##################################################################### First International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems (CISIS-2007) http://www.cisis-conference.eu/ April 10 - April 13, 2007 Vienna, Austria ##################################################################### To be held in conjunction with: ARES-2007 International Conference http://www.ares-conference.eu/ Aim ====== The aim of the conference is to deliver a platform of scientific interaction between the three interwoven challenging areas of research and development of future ICT-enabled applications: - Software Intensive Systems - Complex systems - Intelligent Systems Software Intensive Systems are systems which heavily deal with other systems, sensors, actuators, devices, other software systems and users. More and more domains are involved with software intensive systems, i.e. automotive, telecommunication systems, embedded systems in general, industrial automation systems, business applications. The outcome of web services delivers a new platform for enabling software intensive systems. The conference will focus on tools, practically relevant and heoretical foundations for engineering software intensive systems. Complex Systems Research is focused on the overall understanding of systems rather than its components. The ICT-enabling aspect of Complex Systems is the focus of the contributions to be presented at CISIS 2007. Complex Systems are very much characterised by the changing environments in which they act and by their multiple internal and external interactions. They evolve and adapt through internal and external dynamic interactions. The development of Intelligent Systems and agents which is more and more characterised by the use of ontologies and their logical foundations build a fruitful impulse for both Software intensive Systems and Complex Systems. Recent research in the field of intelligent systems ?robotics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and cognitive sciences- builds an important factor for the future development and innovation of software intensive and complex systems. CISIS 2007 is aiming at delivering a forum for in-depth scientific discussions amongst the three communities leading to significant contributions in areas such as: - Monitoring and Control of Large Systems or Environments. - Managing the hetrogeneity of knowledge by means of ontologies - Use of Sevice Oriented Architectures for complex applications in business and industries - The consideration of Software Intensive Systems as Complex Systems - Enabling of Systems Biology concepts as software intensive conmplex systems - Knowledge management of complex IT-systems etc. Scope ========= Networks of today are going through a rapid evolution. Different kinds of systems with different characteristics are emerging and they are integrating in heterogeneous networks. For these reasons, there are many interconnection problems which may occur at different levels in the hardware and software design of communicating entities and communication networks. These kinds of networks need to manage an increasing usage demand, provide support for a significant number of services, guarantee their QoS, and optimize the utilization of network resources. Therefore, architectures and algorithms in these networks become very complex and it seems imperative to focus on new models and methods as well as mechanisms, which can enable the network to perform adaptive behaviors. Many new computing technologies have emerged as new paradigms for solving complex problems by enabling large-scale aggregation and sharing of computational, data and other geographically distributed resources. Rapid advances are being reported by many researchers and forums as regards understanding numerous issues in such paradigms, from theoretic to application aspects. Moreover, the continuous development of Internet and the construction of new infrastructures are making possible the development of large scale applications from many fields of science and engineering. To deal with complexity, we should construct physically instantiated systems that can perceive, understand, and interact with their environment ? but also evolve in order to achieve human-like performance in activities requiring context-specific knowledge. This is far beyond the current state of the art and will remain so for many years to come. Therefore, many research efforts are required to make headway towards this vision. The strategic challenges are motivated by recent research in the field of intelligent systems ? robotics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and cognitive sciences. In recent years, a large community of researchers has begun to realize the importance of brain-body interaction for understanding intelligence and its central role in a wide range of processes including perception, object manipulation, movement, and high-level cognition. The research challenges include theoretical frameworks based on the notions of embodiment, the dynamical systems metaphor, complete agents rather than individual components, self-reconfiguration and self-repair, morphology and development. Progress in the theoretical underpinnings of embodied intelligence will have strong technological implications in areas including robotics, actuator technology, materials, self-assembling systems. Research in intelligent and cognitive systems is an interdisciplinary field requiring the cooperation of researchers from artificial intelligence, neuroscience (including cognitive and computational), psychology (cognitive and developmental), linguistics, developmental biology, robotics (and engineering in general), biomechanics, and dynamical systems. Software has become a central part of a rapidly growing range of applications, products and services from all sectors of economic activity. Systems in which software interacts with other software, systems, devices, sensors and with people are called software- intensive systems. Examples include large-scale heterogeneous systems, embedded systems for automotive and avionics applications, telecommunications, wireless ad hoc systems, business applications with an emphasis on web services. Our daily activities increasingly depend on complex software-intensive systems that are becoming ever more distributed, heterogeneous, decentralized and inter-dependent, and that are operating more and more in dynamic and often unpredictable environments. There exist different kinds of complexity in the development of software. Software systems grew larger, the focus shifted from the complexity of developing algorithms to the complexity structuring large systems, and then to the additional complexities in building distributed, concurrent systems. In the next ten to fifteen years we will have to face another level of complexity arising from the fact that systems have to operate in large, open and non- deterministic environments: the complexity of knowledge, interaction and adaptation. Instead of developing computer-oriented systems where people have to adapt to the computer we have to develop human- oriented systems into which computers integrate seamlessly. Also, the requirements for software quality will dramatically increase. But our current methods are not sufficient to deal with adaptive software in a dynamic environment, especially not for large systems with complex interactions. We need to develop practically useful and theoretically well founded principles, methods and tools for engineering future software-intensive systems. All the complex systems depend on software that controls the behavior of individual components and the interaction between components, and on software which interacts with other software, systems, devices, sensors and with people. In other words: they depend on software- intensive systems. The CISIS-2007 seeks original contributions in all relevant areas, including but not limited to the following topics. The importance of context is widely acknowledged, and "context" has become an area of study in its own right, as evidenced by numerous workshops, symposia, seminars, and conferences on this area. CONTEXT, the oldest conference series focusing on context, is unique in its emphasis on interdisciplinary research. Previous CONTEXT conferences have been held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (CONTEXT'97), Trento, Italy (CONTEXT'99, LNCS 1688), Dundee, Scotland (CONTEXT'01, LNCS 2116), Palo Alto, U.S.A. (CONTEXT'03, LNCS 2680), and Paris, France (CONTEXT'05, LNCS 3554). Each of these brought together researchers and practitioners from many disparate fields to discuss and report on context-related research and projects. TOPICS OF INTEREST ------------------ The following list illustrates sample research areas whose perspectives on context are solicited for the conference. This is not an exhaustive list, and contributions addressing context from other perspectives are welcome. The conference scope includes the contextual issues related to areas such as: Analogy and Case-Based Reasoning Intelligent/Semantic Web Systems Autonomous Agents and Agent-based Knowledge Engineering and Management Systems Knowledge Representation Cognitive Modeling Language Understanding and Production Concepts and Categorization Learning Context-Aware Applications and Memory, Representation and Access Systems Multiagent Systems and Interagent Databases Communication Distributed Information Systems Neuroscience Formal Semantics and Pragmatics Formal Theories of Context Ontology Management Heterogeneous Information Organizational Theory and Design Integration Perception Human Decision-Making and Decision Philosophical Foundations of Context Support Systems Problem Solving and Planning Human-Centered Computing Reasoning Human-Computer Interaction Relevance Computation and Relevance Information Management Theories Intelligent Tutoring Systems Situated and Distributed Cognition Intelligent User Interfaces Ubiquitous Computing CONFERENCE EVENTS ----------------- CONTEXT'07 will include paper presentation sessions, a poster and demonstration session, two days of workshops, and a doctoral consortium. Workshops and the doctoral consortium will circulate separate calls for papers and participation, which will also be available at the conference web site. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA AND SUBMISSION CATEGORIES --------------------------------------------- Because CONTEXT'07 will be an interdisciplinary forum, all submissions will be evaluated both for their technical merit and for their accessibility to an interdisciplinary audience. Works that transcend disciplinary boundaries are especially encouraged. Submissions may be for full papers, poster abstracts, or demonstration abstracts. Full papers will be accepted either for oral presentation or for presentation at a poster session. All accepted full paper submissions will be published in the proceedings. Accepted posters and demonstrations will be presented at the poster session, and the associated abstracts will be published in a brochure distributed to attendees. IMPORTANT DATES * Submission of papers: 27 January 2007 * Notification of acceptance: 7 March 2007 * Conference: 6-8 June 2007 From moriol at inf.ethz.ch Fri Nov 10 16:49:10 2006 From: moriol at inf.ethz.ch (Manuel Oriol) Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2006 16:49:10 +0100 Subject: [ecoop-info] Assistant (PhD/postdoc) positions at ETH Zurich, Meyer team Message-ID: The chair of software engineering (Prof. Bertrand Meyer) is recruiting assistants for several ongoing and new projects in - Class proofs - Automatic testing - Concurrency/distribution/transactions - Dynamic software evolution Assistants at ETH pursue a PhD and participate in teaching and other activities of the chair. We offer an excellent environment, outstanding resources and competitive salaries (currently about 60,000 CHF/year for PhD students). All recent university rankings place ETH in the top tier of world research universities and at the very top in continental Europe. The Chair of Software Engineering currently includes two professors and a highly diverse team of about 20 PhD students and postdocs covering several areas of software engineering researchers. We are looking for highly qualified candidates; please do not answer unless you feel you have the appropriate profile. In particular: - You must have a strong software engineering background, both the theoretical basis and software development experience. - You must know object technology thoroughly and either have good practice of Eiffel (the language and method that we use for most of our work) or be prepared to acquire it rapidly, building from other experience. - You must have some background in one or more of the areas cited above. - Even if you are not applying for the "class proofs" position you must have basic experience in formal methods and proofs. - You must be familiar with the basics of our work, about which you can find details at http://se.ethz.ch (see in particular the Research links). - You must include a short (1/2 page to two pages) general description of what kinds of project you would like to tackle (taking into account our research goals as described on the cited Web site). To be accepted by the ETH administration, PhD students must have a master's degree or equivalent from a reputed institution. Please note that there is very little flexibility regarding this requirement; candidates with a bachelor's degree are encouraged to look into our department's pre-doctoral program, which provides the opportunity of a fast-track research master's as a preparation for the doctoral program (see http://www.inf.ethz.ch/education/predoc/index). Qualified candidates should send to mailto:open-positions at inf.ethz.ch an application with the following two attachments (as attachements, not zipped, PDF or text preferred but Word acceptable): - CV, including detailed educational and work experience, grades, names of references, and any information relevant to the position. - Short "mission statement" as described above. Any other information should be in the body of the email. Applications should be sent as early as possible and before December 7, 2006 for a first selection. The positions will remain open until filled. We also expect one or two openings for postdocs or senior researchers in the areas listed above. Interested candidates with a strong research record and organizational abilities are welcome to apply using the same procedure as described above. A growing number of programming languages from commercial and academic spheres have been given usable semantic descriptions by means of structural operational semantics. Because of its intuitive appeal and flexibility, structural operational semantics has found considerable application in the study of the semantics of concurrent processes. Moreover, it is becoming a viable alternative to denotational semantics in the static analysis of programs, and in proving compiler correctness. Recently, structural operational semantics has been successfully applied as a formal tool to establish results that hold for classes of process description languages. This has allowed for the generalisation of well-known results in the field of process algebra, and for the development of a meta-theory for process calculi based on the realization that many of the results in this field only depend upon general semantic properties of language constructs. This special issue aims at documenting state-of-the-art research, new developments and directions for future investigation in the field of structural operational semantics. Specific topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * programming languages * process algebras * higher-order formalisms * rule formats for operational specifications * meaning of operational specifications * comparisons between denotational, axiomatic and operational semantics * compositionality of modal logics with respect to operational specifications * congruence with respect to behavioural equivalences * conservative extensions * derivation of proof rules from operational specifications * software tools that automate, or are based on, SOS. Papers reporting on applications of SOS to software engineering and other areas of computer science are welcome. This special issue is an outgrowth of the series of SOS workshops, which started in 2004, and serves in part as a opportunity to publish the full versions of the best papers presented at SOS 2006. However, papers that were not presented at SOS 2006 are equally welcome, and all submissions will be refereed and subjected to the same quality criteria, meeting the standards of Information and Computation. Papers submitted to the special issue must contain original material that has not previously been published, and parallel submission for publication elsewhere is not allowed. However, an extended abstract or short version of the paper may be submitted for presentation at the SOS 2007 workshop, which will take place before the publication of the special issue. PAPER SUBMISSION: We solicit unpublished papers reporting on original research on the general theme of SOS. Papers should take the form of a dvi, postscript or pdf file. We recommend following Elsevier's instructions at http://authors.elsevier.com/JournalDetail.html?PubID=622844 and using LaTeX2e with documentclass elsart.
