SAC 2008 is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (SIGAPP), and is hosted by the University of Fortaleza and the Federal University of Cear\'a, in Brazil. - OOPS Track Today's large scale software systems are typically designed and implemented using the concepts of the object-oriented (OO) paradigm. However, there is still a need for existing OO languages and architectures to continuously adapt in response to demands for new features and innovative approaches. The basic aim of the OOPS track at the SAC 2008 is to promote and stimulate further research on the object-oriented programming and distributed-object paradigms. This track will invite papers investigating the development of extensions and enhancements to the prevalent OO languages, such as Java, C# and C++, the formulation of innovative OO-based middleware approaches, and the improvements to existing and well-established distributed-object based systems. A medium to long-term vision is also solicited, tackling general issues about the current and future role of prevalent OO languages and distributed architectures in Computer Science and Engineering. The specific topics of interest for the OOPS track include, but are not limited to, the following: * Design and implementation of novel abstractions, constructs and mechanisms * Type systems * Multi-paradigm features * Language features in support of adaptability * Aspect-oriented programming * Component-based programming * Meta-programming, reflection, generative programming * Program structuring, modularity * Distributed objects and concurrency * Middleware * Heterogeneity and interoperability * Applications of distributed object computing * Compilation techniques * Virtual machines Original papers and implementation reports are invited from all areas of OO programming languages and distributed-object computing. Particularly of interest are papers that provide a thorough analysis covering theory, design, implementation, applicability, performance evaluation, and comparison/integration with existing constructs and mechanisms. - Submission Instructions Prospective papers should be submitted in pdf format using the provided automated submission system available at http://sac.cs.iupui.edu/SAC2008/. All papers should represent original and previously unpublished works that are currently not under review in any conference or journal. Both basic and applied research papers are welcome. Hardcopy and fax submissions will not be accepted. Submission of the same paper to multiple tracks is not allowed. The author(s) name(s) and address(es) must not appear in the body of the paper, and self-reference should be in the third person. This is to facilitate a blind review process. The format of the paper must adhere to the sig-alternate style (the templates are available at http://www.acm.org/conferences/sac/sac2008/downloads08.htm). The body of the paper should not exceed 4000 words (5 pages according to the above style). Papers that fail to comply with length limitations risk rejection. All papers must be submitted by September 8, 2007. For more information please visit the SAC 2008 Website at http://www.acm.org/conferences/sac/sac2008/. - Proceedings and special issue Accepted full papers will be published by ACM in the annual conference proceedings, with the option (at additional expense) to add 3 more pages. Accepted poster papers will be published as extended 2-page abstracts in the same proceedings. Please note that full registration is required for paper and poster inclusion in the conference proceedings and CD. Student registration does not cover paper and poster inclusion in the conference proceedings, but it is only intended to encourage student attendance. Costa, Federal University of Goias, Brazil Van Den Berg Aswin, Motorola Labs, USA John C. Examples of such applications include those from pervasive and Grid computing domains. These systems are required to be adaptable, flexible, reconfigurable and, increasingly, self-managing. Such characteristics make systems more prone to failure when executing and thus the development and study of appropriate mechanisms for runtime validation and monitoring is needed. In the model-driven software development area, research effort has focused primarily on using models at design, implementation, and deployment stages of development. This work has been highly productive with several techniques now entering the commercialisation phase. The use of model-driven techniques for validating and monitoring run-time behaviour can also yield significant benefits. A key benefit is that models can be used to provide a richer semantic base for run-time decision-making related to system adaptation and other run-time concerns. For example, one can use models to help determine when a system should move from a consistent architecture to another consistent architecture. Model-based monitoring and management of executing systems can play a significant role as we move towards implementing the key self-* properties associated with autonomic computing. Goal The goal of this workshop is to look at issues related to developing appropriate model-driven approaches to monitoring and managing the execution of systems. This is the first workshop to address this theme and its treatment requires the bringing together of a variety of communities including researchers working on model-driven software development, software architectures, reflection (including for example architectural reflection), and autonomic and self healing systems. Discussions in the workshop will address questions such as: What should a runtime model look like? How can the models be maintained at runtime? What are the best approaches to follow when developing runtime models? Workshop Format The workshop participants will be selected based on their experience and ideas related to this new and emerging field. You are invited to apply for attendance by sending a position paper (using 11 or 12 pt fonts, maximum 5 pages) in PDF or PS. Submissions will be reviewed by the organizers. The authors will be notified about acceptance before the MoDELS 2007 early registration deadline. A primary deliverable of the workshop is a report that clearly outlines (1) the research issues and challenges in terms of specific research problems in the area, and (2) a synopsis of existing model-based solutions that target some well-defined aspect of monitoring and managing the execution of systems. Potential attendees are strongly encouraged to submit position papers that clearly identify research issues and challenges or present techniques that address well-defined problems in the area. The first part of the workshop will focus on identifying the research issues and challenges and framing an initial set of research questions. The second part of the workshop will focus on discussing approaches for tackling the problems; in particular, the integration of runtime models with model-driven development approaches will be discussed. The workshop aims to: - Integrate and combine research ideas from the areas cited above. - Provide a ?state-of-the-research? assessment expressed in terms of research issues, challenges, and accomplishments. This assessment can be used to guide research in the area. - Initiate a network of researchers in the area. Initially, the researchers in the network will share related experience and research results via a mailing list. - Plan and promote further events on these topics. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: - The relevance and suitability of different model-driven approaches to monitoring and managing systems during runtime. - Compatibility (or tension) between different model-driven approaches. - What should a runtime model look like? - How do models at other phases of the software engineering lifecycle relate to the corresponding run-time models? - How can runtime models be maintained and validated? - What is the role of reflection in maintaining the causal connection between models and run-time systems? - Experience related to the use of run-time models to adapt software systems - Managing and modelling the runtime variability The two best contributions of each workshop and a workshop report will be published in a "Workshop and Symposia" proceedings by Springer in the LNCS series after the conference. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Over the past decade, large-scale ad-hoc and pervasive computing environments have grabbed the attention of the research community as evidenced by the large number of research and development projects in the area. However, despite considerable progress, the promise of pervasive computing still remains elusive. The diversity in currently available devices, networking infrastructure and information content has complicated research efforts, forcing many projects to focus only on point-examples of this technology. This workshop is premised on our belief that underpinning middleware mechanisms are central in weaving together the multitude of sensing, computing, communication and information technologies. In this respect, middleware for pervasive computing and ad-hoc networking provides two core research areas. In particular, pervasive computing middleware will allow you to take advantage of the resources in your environment to tailor your services and applications for seamless access and unrestricted mobility. Ad-hoc networking middleware will permit the formation of ad-hoc communities for new applications. However, such pervasive and ad-hoc environments pose some serious challenges to existing middleware technologies and approaches. A synthesis of the discussion that took place in previous MPAC workshops has led to the identification of the following topics of interest for the workshop. This list is by no means exhaustive. ? Sensor networks: applications, infrastructure, middleware support and emerging standards (OMG DDS, IEEE/NIST 1451.x, OSGi WireAdmin, JSR256 & 257 ?); ? Calculi for sensor data, and middleware support for their processing and distribution; ? Sensor data mining; ? Component-based and service-oriented architectures, and design patterns for sensor based services; ? Theoretical foundations and middleware support for context based adaptation for mobile pervasive systems, and sensor-based services; ? Mobile device-centric sensing platforms and services; ? New notations for specifying context-sensitive systems; ? Ad-hoc communities: applications, infrastructure and middleware support; ? Roles and responsibilities in ad-hoc communities; ? Group management and communication support for ad-hoc communities; ? Ad-hoc network communications, quality of service, management and middleware support; ? Service-connection middleware and architectures; ? Support for zero configuration; ? Middleware for self-assembly, self-configuration, self-distribution and autonomic computing in general; ? Data management infrastructures for ad hoc and pervasive systems; ? Ambient information systems and applications; ? Trust, security, and privacy for pervasive systems and sensor based services; ? Privacy preservation and identity management for device-to-device interactions; ? Reliability and availability in pervasive systems and sensor based services; ? Middleware infrastructures supporting novel applications of pervasive and ad-hoc computing (e.g. advertising, health care, gaming, mobile TV, etc.); ? Tangible computing (surface computing, RFID / NFC, 2D and 3D bar codes); ? Experiences or cases studies with new technologies (WiMax, WiBree); ? Technology trade-offs (agent infrastructures, mobile code systems, event based middleware); ? Resource discovery and management; ? Virtualisation technologies and applications, especially for task migration; ? Implications of heterogeneity (addressing needs for protocol interaction across technologies). Submission The workshop format will be focused around submission of position papers of no more than 6 pages. Please submit your papers in PDF, using the ACM proceeding format (see http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html), to the web site http://www.cis.strath.ac.uk/external/mpac2007/openconf/. Papers are solicited that present a view of the state of the art in a particular sub-problem area, identify specific middleware challenges, and suggest potential avenues for exploration by proposing models, abstractions and infrastructure components addressing these challenges. Approximately two thirds of the workshop will be devoted to the presentation and discussion of these papers, while the remaining third of the time will be devoted to the development of the research roadmap. Papers will be reviewed by at least 2 members of the programme committee. The review process will be based upon identifying the relevance and potential of the position statement to contribute to the elaboration of the roadmap and to stimulate discussion. All accepted papers will appear in a special workshop proceedings volume in the ACM Digital Library as well as in a CD companion proceedings issued to the workshop participants. Appropriate publication of revised versions of the best workshop submissions and the research roadmap along similar lines to the special issue on middleware and systems software for pervasive computing of the Journal of Personal and Ubiquitous Computing and IEEE Distributed Systems Online is being investigated. The emergency management domain is very information-intensive and mission-critical, and the involved tasks exhibit wide heterogeneity, difficulties in communicating and in physically reaching the place. The efficiency of the assistance is an aspect of vital importance, so that all involved people (healthcare workers, drivers, police, firemen, and so on) need to communicate, coordinate and access distributed resources in a simple and fast way. The employed resources (users and medical devices) must dynamically organize themselves in a temporary net, where communication links are established just in time. Therefore, the major requirements of such support systems are dynamicity and context-awareness, i.e. they have to easily self-configure and adapt to the situation variability. The above described context demands the adoption of very innovative and powerful paradigms, much more dynamic and flexible than those usually adopted for conventional distributed systems. The workshop we propose will focus on mobile and distributed approaches to face the issues of emergency scenarios, and to support involved actors in their tasks. This workshop solicits papers (from researchers and practitioners) that address key issues, open problems, models, infrastructures and innovative applications related to mobile and distributed approaches in emergency scenarios. TOPICS OF THE WORKSHOP include, but are not limited to: - Mobile health care - Emergency management - Disaster response - Architectures, infrastructures and middleware for distributed and mobile health care - Applications in emergency scenarios - Monitoring in mobile contexts - Distributed medical data acquisition, integration and management - (Mobile) agents and e-health - Context-aware approaches for distributed and mobile health care IMPORTANT DATES: Paper Submission Deadline: September 30th, 2007 Notification to Authors: November 2nd, 2007 Camera Ready: November 16th, 2007 PAPER SUBMISSION MODIES 2008 accepts submissions that describe original, research work not submitted or published elsewhere. The workshop accepts two types of submissions: Full Papers presenting significant contributions to research and practice (maximum 10 pages) and Short Papers presenting late-breaking results and ongoing work (maximum 4 pages). All submissions must follow IEEE's conference style two-column format including figures and references. Authors are requested to submit their PDF manuscripts electronically using COCUS System (http://www.cocus.info) by following the link and instructions at the workshop home page WORKSHOP CHAIR Giacomo Cabri, Francesco De Mola Email giacomo.cabri at unimore.it, francesco.demola at unimore.it -- |-------------------------------------------------| | Prof. Giacomo Cabri - Ph.D., Associate Professor | Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione | Universita' di Modena e Reggio Emilia - Italia | e-mail giacomo.cabri at unimore.it | tel. +39-059-2056190 fax +39-059-2056129 |-------------------------------------------------| From zimmerth at cs.uni-sb.de Fri Aug 10 10:17:57 2007 From: zimmerth at cs.uni-sb.de (Tom Zimmermann) Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2007 10:17:57 +0200 Subject: [ecoop-info] Myths in Software Engineering (MythSE) Message-ID: <0A80B2F9-7CDE-410C-8C13-8B81022C9E18@cs.uni-sb.de> CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS MythSE - Myths in Software Engineering Wiki: http://mythse.wikispaces.com/ Working Session @ ICSM: October 4, 2007, afternoon, Paris, France SCOPE AND TOPICS Myths and urban legends have become integrated into our daily lives. TV shows, such as MythBusters, tackle myths through experiments, which attempt to either debunk these myths or to explain the facts behind these myths. Myths exist also in science and hinder the progress of knowledge. For instance, the annual Workshop on Duplicating, Deconstructing, and Debunking provides a forum to ?deconstruct prior findings by providing greater, in-depth insight into causal relationships or correlations? in the computer architecture domain. Software Engineering (SE) contains its own set of myths and urban legends. The experience gained by researchers in the software maintenance community should be valuable in studying various SE myths and in separating myths from facts. The goal of this half-day working session is to increase awareness of many SE myths and to offer an open venue to discuss and understand them. WIKI The organizers are collecting popular SE myths online through a Wiki. Please participate, even if you don't pan to attend the working session at ICSM. Also feel free to add any additional myth candidates. http://mythse.wikispaces.com/ You can participate as follows: - submit a 2 page position paper about a potential myth - add references to your papers in the area of a potential myth - provide empirical facts and experiences - discuss potential myths The participants of the Wiki will have the opportunity to present their ideas and research at an ICSM working session (see below). WORKING SESSION The organizers will select two myths for discussion in a working session at ICSM 2007 on October 4, 2007. For each myth, they will invite advocates and opponents to facilitate the discussion. The deliverable of the working session will be a collection of arguments and facts (e.g., published studies and experience reports) for each myth. Additionally, the audience will be polled before and after the session on each myth to decide if it is myth or fact. PROPOSED MYTHS The following list of myths was collected among participants of ICSE 2007. The myths in the list are phrased in a provocative tone on purpose (in order to encourage the participation of advocates and opponents): * Clones are evil. For a long time code cloning was considered harmful; however, recent studies show that cloning might even be beneficial and desirable. * Bugs reside in complex code. In the quest for metrics that predict bugs, many tools report various code complexity metrics; however, recent studies show that most complexity metrics correlate with just LOC. Is it really complexity that makes programs fail? * Aspect-oriented programs are easy to maintain. Aspect-oriented programming seems to be a story of successes; however, after ten years of active research (including its own conference), it is not clear whether aspect-oriented programs are any easier to maintain than traditional programs. Jim Purbrick and Mark Lentczner. You may not recognize these names, but you might know their alter egos: Babbage Linden and Zero Linden, of Linden Labs. They are the creators of Second Life, a 3D virtual world that is changing how we think about the real world, how we live in multiple worlds, and how we do business in the 21st century. Purbrick and Lentczner are the Onward! keynote speakers. Peter Turchi. He is the director of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. You certainly don?t recognize his name. Turchi is the award-winning author of Maps of the Imagination, an exploration of the relationships between creative writing, making maps, and creativity. He is our keynote speaker, and perhaps the most mind-bending of all our speakers. That's just a sampling of what makes ooPSLA the conference of choice for software technologists---from recognized academics to undergraduate students, from industrial researchers to developers and managers, from the creators of technology to its users. We are proud to offer you ooPSLA and look forward to sharing the experience with you in Montr?al this fall. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Co-located events: DLS 2007 (http://www.swa.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/dls07/) ISMM 2007 (http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~greg/ismm07/) WikiSym 2007 (http://www.wikisym.org/ws2007/) LCSD 2007 (http://lcsd.cs.tamu.edu/2007/) APL 2007 (http://www.sigapl.org/apl2007.html) Mini PloP (http://refactory.com/OOPSLA_Workshop.html) CompFrame 2007 (http://www.compframe.org/compframe2007/) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information and to register, go to http://oopsla.org/. Over the last decade, we have witnessed the emergence of models, formalisms and mechanisms to describe concurrent and distributed computations and systems based on the concept of coordination. The purpose of a coordination model is to enable the integration of a number of, possibly heterogeneous, components (processes, objects, agents) in such a way that the resulting ensemble can execute as a whole, forming a software system with desired characteristics and functionalities which possibly takes advantage of parallel and distributed systems. The coordination paradigm is closely related to other contemporary software engineering approaches such as multi-agent systems, service-oriented architectures, component-based systems and related middleware platforms. Furthermore, the concept of coordination exists in many other Computer Science areas such as workflow systems, cooperative information systems, distributed artificial intelligence, and internet technologies. After more than a decade of research, the coordination paradigm is gaining increased momentum in state-of-the-art engineering paradigms such as multi-agent systems and service-oriented architectures: in the first case, coordination abstractions are perceived as essential to design and support the working activities of agent societies; in the latter case, service coordination, orchestration, and choreography are going to be essential aspects of the next generations of systems based on Web services. The Special Track on Coordination Models, Languages and Applications takes a deliberately a broad view of what constitutes coordination. Accordingly, major topics of interest this year will include: - Novel models, languages, programming and implementation techniques - Applications of coordination technologies - Industrial points of view: experiences, applications, open issues - Internet- and Web-based coordinated systems - Coordination of multi-agent systems, including mobile agents, intelligent agents, and agent-based simulations - Coordination in Service-oriented architectures and Web Services - Languages for service description and composition - Models, frameworks and tools for Group Decision Making - Modern Workflow Management Systems and Case-Handling - Coordination in Computer Supported Cooperative Work - Software architectures and software engineering techniques - Configuration and Architecture Description Languages - Coordination Middleware and Infrastructures - Coordination in GRID systems - Emergent Coordination: Swam based, Stigmergy - Coordination technologies, systems and infrastructures - Relationship with other computational models such as object oriented, declarative (functional, logic, constraint), programming or their extensions with coordination capabilities - Formal aspects (semantics, reasoning, verification) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- PROCEEDINGS AND JOURNAL SPECIAL ISSUE Papers accepted for the Special Track on Coordination Models, Languages and Applications will be published by ACM both in the SAC 2008 proceedings and in the Digital Library. After the conference, appropriate papers will be selected by the programme committee, and their authors invited to submit an extended version for publication in a special issue of Science of Computer Programming: http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/505623/descript ion#description ----------------------------------------------------------------------- PAPER SUBMISSION Original papers from the above-mentioned or other related areas will be considered. Adaptation processes should combine solutions from different research domains: (i) model-based or formal approaches to develop mismatch detection and adaptor models generation algorithms, (ii) middleware technology to support the detection of mismatch at run-time and the implemen- tation of adaptor models, (iii) QoS and prediction models to assess the effect of adaptation on running systems. Software adaptation has been tackled mainly at the signature and behavioral (protocol, choreography, orchestration) interface levels, yet it should be addressed at any of the different interaction levels: signatures, behaviours, non functional properties (time, QoS) and semantics. J.UCS - the Journal for Universal Computer Science - is an electronic hypermedia journal that publishes high-quality, original articles that have not been submitted to or published in any other publications in a similar form. The journal is currently indexed in Thompson Scientific's ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * interfaces, types and contracts supporting coordination and adaptation; * identification and specification of interaction requirements and problems; * behavioral interfaces, extra-functional properties; * automatic generation of compositions or adaptors; * formal / rigorous approaches to software adaptation; * coordination and adaptation of services; * coordination and adaptation in pervasive computing; * relations between adaptation and the software life-cycle; * relations between adaptation and MDE; * relations between adaptation and AOSD; * metrics and prediction models for software coordination and adaptation; * prediction of the coordination and adaptation impact on Quality of Service; * surveys, case studies, industrial or experience reports. HOW TO SUBMIT Prospective authors are encouraged to submit self-contained articles, i.e. the paper can be understood without knowledge of any previous articles. Submissions must be sent to the guest editors of the special issue (see below), and must follow the guidelines for authors of J.UCS (see details below). The recommended length of a paper is 20 - 30 pages. All submissions will follow the standard revision process, and will be reviewed by an international program committee of experts in the field (in preparation) that will select them for acceptation in the special issue. We intend to perform a completely anonymous review process. Hence, submissions must not contain the authors' names, and references to previous works of the authors should be left blank in the bibliography. IMPORTANT DATES If you are interested in submitting your contribution to the special issue, please contact the guest editors (see below) now in order that we can have an estimation of the number of papers to be received. Each pattern has a title, and collectively the titles form a language for design [1]. Pattern Languages are simply a collection of interrelated patterns [2]. These interrelated patterns are combined in any way and combination to create new environments, where practitioners can solve context-specific problems. Precisely, the concept of pattern languages has invaded over into the software engineering field, to describe prior experiences and the processes that stem from them, in a very simple language, where patterns are tactfully woven as a whole, and can be combined in any manner to solve a particular and complex problem. Yet, this process is still done in an ad-hoc manner and is not straightforward enough, to ease and speed up the software development process. Thus, this workshop is driven forward by three main questions. First, how can we classify, develop, and utilize analysis and design patterns together towards the path of a problem resolution? Second, what is the ?behind-the-? language that guides the sewing of patterns together as a whole? And third, how can we overcome and face challenges, other than patterns composition problems (patterns traceability, etc.) that can hinder the development of a system of patterns? The inherent inability to answer these questions detrimentally impacts the understanding of how to put patterns in real practice, and will therefore make software patterns? use more complex than it should. OBJECTIVE AND MOTIVATION Building high quality systems is not an easy exercise, specifically when several factors can undermine their quality success, such as cost, time, and lack of systematic approaches. The potential promise of using software patterns in software development to deal with these aforementioned obstacles, has led software practitioners to steadfastly believe in the power of pattern languages, as the means for constructing complex systems in a constrained environment. Software Patterns, along with Pattern Languages, have recently attracted software practitioners for more than a decade. They have seen software patterns and pattern languages as really promising techniques that ease and speed up their software development [2, 3, 4, and 5]. However, developing robust software patterns and pattern languages has not reached the expected ease and flexibility it should have been, when dealing with determined problems; instead, they construct models that specifically lack some essential qualities that diminish the overall quality of the system rather than improving it [6]. The concept of Pattern Languages [3, 7, 8, and 9] is spilling over into the software engineering field, to highlight software development?s prior experiences or best practices, using a coherent language that can be used for both discussing about a particular problem and also in creating new environments from the patterns it conveys. This language works by connecting a collection of patterns, as if they were in a detailed, narrated story. Each of the patterns in the collection is an insightful and a novel way to manage or solve a set of recurrent problems in a particular context [2, 3, and 5]. As a whole, they make clearly visible both the knowledge that is pertinent to a particular domain, and the solutions for a set of recurrent problems. Pattern languages have emerged as a promising classification technique and in providing ways to build frameworks. However, there area number of problems [10], such as: 1. Context?s missing indicators/guidelines for in-context patterns selection within the pattern language. 2. Classifications of patterns? rationale within the pattern language structure is also missing. 3. Traceability is lost, especially when dealing with deeper levels of pattern language implementation. 4. No systematic way for compositing these patterns, similar or different, to build software architectures 5. There is a loss of generality in traditional pattern languages. 6. Pattern languages struggles and conflicts in providing full software maintainability and stability. 7. How pattern languages deal with the problem they address is neither straightforward nor easy. 8. There is no set classification in pattern languages. 9. Pattern languages don?t distinguish between associate and remote knowledge. WORKSHOP CHALLENGES The workshop will address pattern languages? challenges and debate several issues related to the following questions. We want researchers, framework developers, and application developers to discuss and debate the following questions related to: I. Pattern Languages Creation and Development a. Leaving career experience claim on the side, can you show how to create and develop pattern languages? b. What are the bases of creating pattern Languages? c. Is there a guideline for the selection process from a pattern language? III. Patterns Languages Composition a. How does one integrate the selected pattern languages to build any given system? Or how does one compose any system from one or more pattern languages? b. What are the various claims related to pattern languages composition? Are they really true? c. PROPOSED AGENDA 1. Welcome and introduction of participants. The organizers will first provide a short overview of all open issues and also of the main arguments arising out of the position papers. (Estimated time: 20-30 minutes) 2. Selected authors (who?ll be representing the main trends) will be allotted 20 minutes to explain how their position relates to other positions, and what each one of them sees as the three major issues. We expect about 5-10 position papers in this session. (Estimated time: 120-130 minutes) 3. The organizers will propose an identification process of the major issues, and the participants will then discuss, choose and select what they perceive are the hottest issues to be examined. (Estimated time: 10-15 minutes) 4. The participants will work for 70-95 minutes in small groups, with a designated moderator assigned for each group. The groups will individually deal with two different, identified hot issues and will produce a summary note in the form of points and counterpoints, showing either how several views are irreducibly opposed or how they are complementary. The total number of groups will depend mainly on the number of participants and issues selected; ideally there should be 3-5 p people in each group. (Estimated time: 60-70 minutes) 5. Each group will be given 10-15 minutes to present its findings and inferences to the workshop. A closing discussion will soon follow. The workshop report will be composed on the basis of these findings, and will include a clear cut agenda for future exploration and cooperation; this will be made available through the WWW and FTP. (Estimated time: 50-60 minutes for five teams) (Total estimated time: 285-315 minutes, i.e. about five hours +/- 15 minutes; lunch and breaks are not included.) Fayad --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The First International Workshop on Patterns Languages: Addressing Challenges PLAC 2007 Call for Papers Montr?al, Canada, October 21, 2007 (in conjunction with OOPSLA 2007) http://www.oopsla.org/oopsla2007 (OOPSLA 2007 Link) http://www.oopsla.org/oopsla2007/index.php?page=sub/&id=150 (Workshop Link 1) http://www.engr.sjsu.edu/~fayad/workshops/PLAC07 (Workshop Link 2) http://www.vrlsoft.com/workshops/PLAC07 (Workshop Link 3) INTRODUCTION A pattern language consists of a cascade or hierarchy of parts, linked closely together by patterns, which solve generically recurring problems that are associated with the parts. Leaving career experience claim on the side, can you show how to create and develop pattern languages? b. What are the bases of creating pattern Languages? c. Are there guidelines, methodologies, and/or processes for pattern language creations and developments? d. Would you show an example or two of systematic and non-systematic pattern languages? e. What is the starting point of any pattern language? f. What are the components of any pattern language? g. What kind of patterns that appear in pattern languages? II. Pattern Languages Selection Process: a. How does one select analysis and design patterns to create a pattern language? b. What is the basis for selecting these patterns into the pattern language? c. If someone would like to build a system from patterns, how does he/she select patterns from the pattern language? d. What kind of patterns should one select to build a system from patterns? e. Is there a guideline for the selection process from a pattern language? III. Patterns Languages Composition a. How does one integrate the selected pattern languages to build any given system? Or how does one compose any system from one or more pattern languages? b. What are the various claims related to pattern languages composition? Are they really true? c. Are there any guidelines or techniques for pattern languages composition? Would you illustrate how to use them? IV. System of Patterns and General Reuse a. What do we mean, when we say ?systems of patterns?? b. Are the various claims related to building any system from pattern languages reasonable? c. How to develop pattern repositories and catalogs, from which pattern languages can be retrieved and reused? d. Are there any automated approaches for patterns using languages mining and integration? e. What other concepts will help assist build any system from pattern languages? f. Can patterns within a given pattern language appear in other remote pattern languages? g. Is it possible to create many architectures from a given pattern languages? How many architectures? h. Can we measure the ROI from the pattern language of a given domain? i. Is it possible to measure or perform cost estimation using pattern languages? j. It is possible to insert the quality factors with the pattern languages? How? V. Impacts a. What is the impact of software stability on the above mentioned challenges and software quality factors? (Estimated time: 50-60 minutes for five teams) (Total estimated time: 285-315 minutes, i.e. about five hours +/- 15 minutes; lunch and breaks are not included.)
