CLOSING DATE: 30 November 2007
STUDENTSHIP START DATE: 01 January 2008
STUDENTSHIP DURATION: 6 months
STIPEND: £ 1000 per month
Applications are invited for a visiting studentship to undertake research on
traceability in aspect-oriented analysis and design in the Computing
Department at Lancaster University. The Computing Department is a leading
research centre with a major international reputation for its work on
experimental and systems-oriented computer science. It was awarded grade 5
in the 2001 national assessment of research in UK universities. The
department offers a highly collegiate and stimulating environment with
around 30 faculty, 53 researchers and a team of technical and administrative
support staff (including research support). We also have a very large PhD
programme with over 100 participants, and hold approximately £10m in
research funding from a diverse range of sources including from EPSRC and EU
sponsored research projects and direct from industry. The department is
housed in InfoLab21, a state-of-the-art building dedicated to world class
research and technology transfer in ICT (http://infolab21.lancs.ac.uk/).
The Department has an international reputation for its research in
aspect-oriented software engineering. We are at the forefront of several key
research areas such as Early Aspects: aspect-oriented requirements
engineering and architecture design, metrics-based evaluation of
aspect-oriented systems, aspect-oriented middleware, aspect-oriented
databases and aspect variability for product line engineering. We also lead
the European Commission funded European Network of Excellence on
Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD-Europe) and are actively involved
in organisation of international events on the topic including the
Aspect-Oriented Software Development Conference that we successfully hosted
in 2004.
This studentship is to aimed at placing the student at the heart of the
traceability work being conducted in two European Commission Framework 6
projects namely, AOSD-Europe: European Network of Excellence on AOSD and
AMPLE: Aspect-Oriented, Model-Driven Product Line Engineering. The visiting
student will have the opportunity to work as part of a team of researchers
engaged in these projects at Lancaster and across Europe.
The successful candidate must have a BSc or MSc in Computer Science (or a
related discipline) and must be pursuing post-graduate studies at present.
The studentship will suit someone pursuing a PhD in a relevant area and
aiming to extend/enhance his/her knowledge through a period of study at
Lancaster. The student must possess knowledge of aspect-oriented software
development especially analysis and design methods in this context. Above
all, s/he must possess initiative, motivation and an ability to produce
deliverables in a timely fashion as well as work as part of a team.
The successful candidate will join an ambitious research group with a strong
track record in aspect-oriented software engineering. We would expect the
successful candidate to focus his/her research interests accordingly, and
contribute to the dynamic and internationally respected research environment
in the Department. S/he will also be required to interact with project
partners across Europe and travel to meetings in Europe on a regular basis.
S/he will also be expected to attend relevant conferences and workshops,
both nationally and internationally, to promote the outcomes of the project.
The studentship is for 6 months starting from 1 Jan. 2008 and offers a
healthy stipend at £1000 per month.
Interested candidates should send a CV and a statement of research interests
(1 side of A4) max. to Yvonne Rigby (y.rigby at lancaster.ac.uk) by 17:00 GMT
30 November 2007. Suitable candidates are encouraged to make informal
enquires to Prof. Awais Rashid (awais at comp.lancs.ac.uk) and visit the
Aspect-Oriented Software Engineering pages at Lancaster University:

Closing date for applications: 30 November 2007
Expected start date for studentship: 01 January 2008
