Starting in 2008, EuroPLoP hosts thematic tracks that put a special
focus on hot topics. The track on "Pragmatic and systematic approaches
in applying patterns" focuses on:
- the pragmatic application of patterns that takes place today in the
industry
- the idealized systematic approaches for applying patterns that are
still at a research stage

The application of the different types of patterns in practice has not
met the expectations of the patterns community. Most practitioners are
aware of the GoF patterns and some idioms in specific programming
languages or platforms, but few of them work systematically with patterns
for architecture, analysis, process etc. The discipline of software
engineering is significantly lacking in incorporating patterns in
standardized and well-proven processes, methods, techniques and tools.
Notably, there is some increase in teaching patterns in higher
education and professional training programmes, but the results
are not yet visible in the industry.

This thematic track aims at studying the application of patterns
in practice and enforcing the links between the patterns community
and the practitioners. It envisions papers that present the practical
applications of patterns in real industrial
projects, as well as research papers on systematizing the application of
patterns. It hopes to provide visibility to research attempts
for integrating patterns in software engineering industrial practices.
It also aims at stimulating a general discussion on how to
disseminate the patterns literature more in the higher education
and training.

The track will use the standard EuroPLoP process of shepherding and
writer's workshop for the submissions.

The thematic track will be realized as a writers' workshop as well as an
additional Focus Group on the same subject. During the writers' workshop
certain topics will emerge that are urgent and of interest to the
participants.
These topics will be discussed in depth during a Focus Group by plenary
sessions and break-out groups.

Papers discussed at writer's workshop at this conference qualify for
submission to the new journal "Transactions on Pattern Languages of
Programming" published by Springer. See http://hillside.net/tplop/ and
